Israel lost 3–1 to Lithuania in a Davis Cup tennis competition held in Netanya over the weekend. Even though Israel did not win, the team showed strong effort and received amazing support from the home crowd.
This was the first time in two-and-a-half years that the Davis Cup returned to Israel. Around 2,500 fans filled the Netanya Arena. They waved flags, beat drums, and cheered loudly for the Israeli team. The atmosphere was energetic and exciting.
However, Lithuania had a clear advantage. Their players were ranked much higher in the world than Israel’s players. Israel’s highest-ranked player, Amit Vales, was ranked No. 873. The other Israeli players were ranked around 1200. Lithuania’s two main players were ranked No. 129 and No. 277, which gave them a strong edge.
The Davis Cup is one of the biggest international team competitions in tennis. It has existed for 126 years, and in 2026, 160 countries are taking part. This weekend alone, 78 teams competed in 39 different countries.
Friday’s Matches
On Friday, the competition began with an opening ceremony. Both teams walked onto the court while their national anthems were played.
In the first singles match, Amit Vales played against Edas Butvilas. Vales fought hard and pushed the first set into a tiebreak. However, he lost the set 7–6 and then lost the second set 6–0.
In the second match, Ofek Shimanov faced Vilius Gaubas. Gaubas won the first set quickly, 6–0. Shimanov improved in the second set but still lost 6–4. After Friday, Lithuania led 2–0.
Saturday’s Comeback Attempt
On Saturday, Israel tried to fight back. In the doubles match, Daniel Cukierman and Ofek Shimanov played together. After a close first set, they won a dramatic tiebreak 11–9 and then won the second set 6–3. This gave Israel its first win of the weekend and made the score 2–1.
The crowd became even louder and more excited.
The Deciding Match
In the fourth match, Amit Vales played Gaubas. Vales lost the first set but fought back to win the second. In the final set, however, Gaubas regained control and won the match. Vales even needed a short medical break because of pain in his arm.
With this victory, Lithuania won the tie 3–1 and will move forward in the competition. Israel will now compete in a lower group later this year.
Positive Ending
Even though Israel lost, the Lithuanian team said they enjoyed their visit to Netanya. They liked the seaside city and thanked the organizers for their hospitality. One official said that visiting Israel was different from what people sometimes see on television.
The weekend showed how sport can bring countries together, even in tough competition.
