James Webb Telescope Finds a "Galaxy-Killing Wind"

Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have discovered powerful winds in a distant galaxy system that may explain why some early galaxies stopped forming stars much sooner than expected.


When galaxies collide, they usually do not crash into each other like cars. Instead, they slowly merge and become one larger galaxy. However, this process can have dramatic effects. New research suggests that galaxy mergers can create strong winds that push gas out into space. Without gas, galaxies cannot make new stars, causing them to become "dead" or inactive.


Astronomers have been puzzled by a mystery in the early universe. Observations from the James Webb telescope have shown that some galaxies became very large within the first billion years after the Big Bang. Surprisingly, many of these galaxies also stopped forming stars shortly afterward.


To investigate this mystery, researchers studied a galaxy system called CRISTAL-02. They used both the James Webb Space Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile.


The scientists observed CRISTAL-02 as it appeared about one billion years after the Big Bang. The system is the result of several galaxies merging together. It contains about 10 billion times the mass of our sun in stars.


What makes CRISTAL-02 especially interesting is a huge cloud of gas flowing away from the galaxy. This gas stream is almost as large as the galaxy system itself and is moving at hundreds of miles per second.


The researchers believe the outflow is caused by intense star formation. When galaxies collide, large gas clouds are compressed, leading to the birth of many new stars. Some of these stars are extremely massive and live only a short time before exploding as supernovas.


Young stars and supernovas release enormous amounts of energy. This energy creates strong winds that heat up and scatter the cold gas needed to form new stars. As a result, star formation slows down or stops completely.


According to the researchers, CRISTAL-02 forms about 260 new stars every year. However, it is losing more than 500 solar masses of gas annually. In other words, the galaxy is losing star-forming material twice as fast as it can create new stars.

If this process continues, the galaxy could run out of gas in less than 100 million years. In astronomical terms, that is a very short period of time.


The discovery may help explain why so many massive galaxies in the early universe became inactive so quickly. Researchers also found that many young galaxies were interacting with nearby galaxies, suggesting that this process may have been common.


Scientists are still debating whether these powerful outflows are caused mainly by stars or by supermassive black holes. More observations will be needed to answer that question.
