Xi Hosts Meeting with Putin, Modi & Others

ree

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) members on Monday to capitalize on their vast shared market, while laying out his vision for a new security and economic order meant to rival U.S. dominance.

Speaking to more than 20 world leaders at the two-day summit in Tianjin, Xi said the SCO has come out as a model for a new style of international relations. He stressed that the bloc must pride itself on promoting fair global governance and inclusive globalization.

Xi promised 2 billion yuan in free aid this year and another 10 billion yuan in loans through the SCO banking consortium. He warned that countries failing to seize cooperation opportunities risk being doomed to stagnation and could lose out to competitors willing to adapt.

Beijing has worked to get through trade challenges and U.S. tariffs, while encouraging SCO members to sail through difficulties by deepening ties in energy, infrastructure, and technology. Leaders argued that collective action could help poorer economies get by despite economic pressures.

The summit managed to pack in not only Russia’s Vladimir Putin and India’s Narendra Modi but also leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia—demonstrating broad solidarity among Global South nations.

Analysts believe China hopes to carry off this summit as its biggest yet, proving it can provide an alternative model to U.S.-led global order. Yet some observers warn that if economic agreements fall through, the SCO could quickly fall behind its ambitions.

Despite tensions in recent years, Xi and Modi met privately, agreeing that China and India should not see each other as rivals. Instead, they vowed to cooperate, showing that even strained ties can sometimes sail through difficult phases with renewed dialogue.
