Hockey: Mammoth vs Flames

CALGARY — Dustin Wolf stopped 27 shots, and Yegor Sharangovich scored very early to help the Calgary Flames win 2–0 against the Utah Mammoth on Saturday at Scotiabank Saddledome.

This was Wolf’s second shutout of the season, and the fifth shutout of his NHL career.

Wolf said, “We relaxed and played our game. Our team blocked many shots, especially at the end. That shows our team’s character — we always try to get in front of the puck when it’s important. Utah has a strong offense, so it feels good that we didn’t let them score.”

Connor Zary scored the second goal for Calgary. The Flames (record: 11–15–4) have now won the first two games of their four-game homestand and have won six of their last nine games.

Calgary defenseman Rasmus Andersson said, “We started well. Both teams had chances, but Wolf played very well. It feels good to be home for a while. We hope we can keep playing well during these home games.”

Utah goalie Vitek Vanecek made 21 saves. The Mammoth (14–13–3) had just won a game 4–1 against Vancouver on Friday, but they finished their long six-game road trip with only two wins.

Utah coach Andre Tourigny said, “We didn’t start the way we wanted. Later in the game, we played better 5-on-5, but if you want to score in this league, you need to stand in front of the goalie and make it harder for the other team. We stayed too much on the outside.”

Utah forward Logan Cooley did not play because of a lower-body injury. He got hurt on Friday when he ran into Vancouver goalie Kevin Lankinen.

Sharangovich gave Calgary a quick 1–0 lead only 16 seconds into the game. He scored by shooting in a rebound near the crease after Vanecek stopped Nazem Kadri’s wraparound attempt.

Calgary coach Ryan Huska said, “Sharangovich has been stronger with the puck, and that gives him more chances to score. Tonight, he was right in front of the net.”

Utah defenseman Nate Schmidt had a chance to tie the game late in the third period, but he didn’t lift the puck high enough.

Schmidt said, “I wish I could take that shot again. The goalie was moving fast and reading the play well. I tried to shoot in the opposite direction, but I should have at least created a rebound.”

Zary scored Calgary’s second goal into an empty net with about two minutes left, making the final score 2–0.

Coach Tourigny said, “We still have a lot to improve. We are better than at the start of the season, but we need to be faster and move the puck more quickly.”

Notes:• Sharangovich’s goal was Calgary’s fastest goal to start a game since April 3, when Kadri also scored 16 seconds in.• Calgary stopped both penalties and has now killed 17 penalties in a row over six games.
